The pattern etched by the river running; the shape that guides the veins of leaves can also be seen inside our bodies. It shapes our nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. That same self-pattern repeats in every one of our neurons, a billion mirror infinities tied together in a complex network that transmits, processes and stores the bits of information that make up our minds.
Inside us there is an almost limitless expanse, a complex web that transfers nutrients to every cell in our bodies. We are this interconnected corpus, where each system and organ fulfills a coordinated function. It allows us to perceive reality through the experience of our body, process this experience in our mind, and weave it into new shapes while we sleep.
As an attempt to draw us into the inconceivably small scale of our basic components, this installation is based on a photo from the laboratory of the biologist and PhD in Neurosciences Felipe Court, which shows neuronal aggregates— large groups of neurons. These are studied to understand the growth of the nervous system during animal development and the way neurons recognize each other and cluster together.
This photo confronts us with our own internal galaxy; it not only shows how neurons recognized each other to promote the efficient transmission of stimuli, but it is a metaphor for how this process plays out at the cultural and social level, which has allowed us to connect and build our human world, beginning with our caves, tents, then towns, cities, countries, as we flow through roads, streets and roads.
El mismo patrón que dibujan los ríos y las nervaduras de las hojas se repite en gran parte de nuestro cuerpo, dando forma al sistema nervioso, circulatorio y linfático. Como si fueran dos infinitos enfrentándose, cada dendrita y axón de las miles de millones de neuronas que recorren nuestro organismo utilizan un patrón similar para formar complejas redes que transmiten, procesan y almacenan información.
Podemos observar en nuestro interior una extensión casi sin límites, una trama compleja que nos recorre transfiriendo nutrientes. Este corpus interconectado, donde cada sistema, órgano y célula cumple una función coordinada, constituye lo que somos. Nos permite percibir la realidad a través de la experiencia del cuerpo, procesarla en nuestra mente, proyectarla mientras dormimos.
Como un intento por moldear lo intangible a una escala más cercana a la humana, la instalación está basada en una foto del laboratorio del biólogo y PhD en Neurociencias Felipe Court, la cual muestra agregados neuronales. Éstos se estudian para entender la generación del sistema nervioso durante el desarrollo animal y la manera en que las neuronas se reconocen y agregan.
La foto parece enfrentarnos a nuestra propia galaxia interior; no sólo muestra cómo las neuronas se reconocen para fomentar una transmisión eficiente de los estímulos, sino que resulta una metáfora de este proceso a nivel cultural y social, el cual nos ha permitido conectar y potenciarnos, construyendo la ruca, luego el poblado, la ciudad y el país, mientras fluimos por los caminos, calles y carreteras que nos unen.
